What to See While Visiting Idaho for East Boise?

Idaho Shakespeare Festival

If you’re planning your trip during the summer, you don’t want to miss the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.

Held in the amphitheater located in the Boise Foothills, this festival has become a tradition for people from all over the world. Throughout the season, you can view a variety of plays that include at least one by Shakespeare. But they often also offer other popular productions such as Mama Mia and Misery. Make plans to bring a blanket and enjoy a play under the stars.

Old Idaho State Penitentiary

The Old Idaho State Penitentiary was open from 1872 to 1973 and housed some of the most dangerous criminals of the time. This included a member of Butch Cassidy’s gang as well as some fairly well-known women. Today, you can visit the museum to learn all about its history. And you can even book field trips and private tours.

Idaho Botanical Garden

After your tour of the penitentiary, you will want to make a stop at the Idaho Botanical Garden. Until the prison closed, these 50 acres of beautiful landscaping served as the facility’s nursery and farm. Today, it is owned by a non-profit corporation who keeps up the grounds with areas like cacti, rock, herb, rose, English, and medication gardens. You can take guided tours or explore the garden yourself during weekdays in the summer or by appointment in the winter.
